The Hickory Tussock Caterpillar

These black and white caterpillar covered with grayish white hair with black spots on the sides and black tufts along the middle of the back. Both the long, sharp, thin black hair sticking out from the front and back are connected to poison glands of caterpillars. Poisoning occurs when the contact with hair or spines and cause a skin rash or hypersensitivity. Hickory Tussock Caterpillars are generally seen from June to September and can be found in southern Canada and parts of North America. They eat for about eight weeks on the hickory, pecan and walnut trees beside the elm, oak and willow.
